Rush “The Spirit of Radio” …what can one say about a legendary hit by a legendary band. I was not healthy at the time we recorded Words of the Prophets. I pulled the band off the road for 8 months so I could take some time to rebuild my immune system. We really felt that we needed to do something to keep up the momentum with our fans, while we were not on the road so we hatched a plan to do an EP of cover songs that we all grew up with and were inspired by. I chose Rush song The Spirit of Radio for our Words of the Prophets EP simply because the message in the song meant a lot to me. To me it is a tribute to the question “why are you doing music?” I think it is a brilliant metaphor for not losing touch with your purpose and why all the music lovers in the world can’t stop supporting each other when it comes to creating, performing and enjoying music. This song talks about honesty and the spirit behind writing music and why we love it.
Rush “The Spirit of Radio” was a massive challenge for us because Rush’s virtuosity as musicians and composers is huge; their music is not simple, especially for the instruments. There are 8 time changes in the song, and when they recorded it there was no click track! It was very complicated to map it out, and we couldn’t find that 70s flow right away. It’s a skill to jam and be tight with each other, but we eventually caught on, and we kind of dropped in the reggae beat for something a little heavier near the end.
We first played it live on a UK tour, the last show was in Southampton at the Firehouse, and it was amazing; the whole room just lifted when we could share our love of Rush all together. Everyone was moving like a wave in this packed little venue. It will come back on a future set list!
